More than refraction (eye test):
How many optometrists does it take to change a light bulb? One? Or two? One? Or two?
Many of us think that a visit to an optometrist is only for an eye test to get reading and / or distance prescriptions for use in glasses or contact lenses. While this is definitely part of what an optometrist usually does, it is only part of what happens. An eye exam with an optometrist consists of the following:
- A thorough case history (including medications you’re using and diagnosed conditions)
- Internal eye examination
- External eye examination
- A test of how clearly you see (the refraction test)
- How well your eyes work together as a team (binocular vision)
- How well you see colour (colour vision testing)
What if we find a vision problem?
Depending on what problems are found, the optometrist may recommend glasses, contact lenses, eye exercises, prescription eye drops or even refer you for eye surgery or specialist ophthalmic treatment.
